Biography

Ralph Loynachan, MFA
Visual Artist and Percussionist

My name is Ralph Loynachan, born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I have been engaged in mixed media and professional drumming my entire life. My murals span locales from the Hollywood Freeway Silverlake Blvd. underpass to an MIT research lab beneath the Infinite Corridor. I want to contribute to an all-inclusive dialogue of current zeitgeist through my Art. I employ a broad range of media, from photography and video to found object assemblage, from 2-D work to large totems/sculptures and bas-relief. I continue to investigate duality with soundscape and visual imagery.

I am a mixed media artist with an extensive body of work in painting, sculpture and music (http://www.sh-eye-n.com/LIVE/). My recent body of work explores the sociological relationship between our built and natural environment. I have chosen to reimagine the parameters of the celebratory convention of bunting as a proactive vehicle for constructive discourse. Continuums of layered and fractured aesthetic phrases form unique interpretations depending on the juxtaposition and placement within a site-specific environment. A plethora of symbiotic and seemingly jarring transitions oscillate to reveal surprising commonalities. The sheer rhythmic dynamism prompts a visual dialogue through the visceral variety of cloth and vinyl, texture, color and pattern coalescing into an optimistic narrative of inclusiveness.

June 2020

Covid-19 quarantine has compelled a refocus on how to safely and meaningfully gather. Virtual communities spawning dialogue are now realized through video platforms. My Zoom-inspired format captures complicated and difficult narratives in a concentrated way. I employ mixed media collage including distressed vinyl and rubber. The fragmented compositions shift in pace and rhythm prompting
unexpected connections.
